Uploading Your Data

Preparing For Your First Upload

When you are ready to upload, have your insulin pump and all of your blood glucose (BG) meters on hand and do not insert the USB device into your computer until prompted. Before you get started know your computer operating system.

Note

If you are unsure what operating system you have, from your computer desktop

For Personal Computers

  1. Right click on the My Computer or Computer icon

  2. In the window that pops up, left click on Properties

For Mac Computers

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner

  2. Select About this Mac

Depending on the type of computer you have, there are some important things to keep in mind the first time you upload to CareLink.

For Personal Computers

  • The first time you select CareLink USB from the Select the Link Device screen, a window will appear letting you know a necessary software driver will be installed on your computer.

For Personal Computers with Windows Vista or Windows 7 Operating Systems

  • If your computer is running the Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating system, there are additional steps to follow in order to prepare your computer the first time you are going to upload. You only need to perform these steps one time.

For Mac Computers

  • Do not insert the mini disc into your computer. As a result, the CD may be unable to eject. The mini disc included with your CareLink USB does not contain software drivers. It only contains the CareLink USB User Guide.

Uploading Your Data

For Personal Computers and Mac Computers

  1. Sign in to your CareLink Personal account. If you have forgotten your password, use the self-service tool on the CareLink homepage listed as "Forgot your password?"

  2. Make sure you are on the Upload screen. Once the applet loads, the first device upload window is displayed.

  3. Do not connect your USB until prompted. Once you’ve connected your CareLink USB device to your computer make sure your insulin pump is within 6 feet of the CareLink USB.

  4. Follow the instructions on the window. When you are ready to go to the next step, click Next > to display the next window. Follow the instructions on each window, making sure to click Next > when you are ready to move on. To skip steps in the process, wait until the Finish button is highlighted, and click on it instead of Next >.

    Note

It is normal for your insulin pump to go into Suspend mode and stop dispensing insulin during the upload process. The software will automatically return it to normal operation when the upload process is complete.

  5. When you see the Verify Connections window, read the steps. This is to ensure you have properly set up communication between your computer and device. When you are ready to complete the upload, click Finish. A progress window will display to show the progress of your device upload. If for any reason you wish to stop the upload, click CANCEL. If you experience interruptions in the upload, try turning off or moving away from common electronic devices such as cell phones or cordless phones.

  6. Read and follow the instructions on the screen. When the upload completes successfully, the "SUCCESS!" Message will display with options for how to make use of the uploaded data.

Warning

If you click on another tab or link during an upload, the upload will be canceled. You can also stop the upload by clicking Cancel.

Uploading Multiple Devices on a Personal Computer

If you have a MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System with a Linked meter, you only need to upload the data in your insulin pump. Remember, the meter data stored in the insulin pump will be uploaded at the same time as the pump data.

If you have multiple devices, such as an insulin pump with a non-linked meter, each device must be uploaded separately. To upload data from your blood glucose meter, use the cable provided by that meter company to connect to your computer and follow the onscreen steps within CareLink.

Note

Uploading non-linked meters in addition to your insulin pump may cause you to have duplicate blood glucose (BG) data.

Uploading Multiple Devices on a Mac Computer

If you have a MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System with a Linked meter, you only need to upload the data in your insulin pump. Remember, the meter data stored in the insulin pump will be uploaded at the same time as the pump data.

Make sure to start up your Mac in 32-bit kernel mode whenever you want to upload your meter. By default, most Mac computers start in 32-bit kernel mode.

Note

Uploading non-linked meters in addition to your insulin pump may cause you to have duplicate blood glucose (BG) data.

If you are using a Mac computer and have multiple devices, such as an insulin pump with a non-linked meter, each device must be uploaded separately. To upload data from your blood glucose meter, read the specific meter information and then follow the steps below.

  • Bayer CONTOUR® USB meter: You can upload your meter on a Mac without any additional setup.

  • Lifescan meter: You can use a OneTouch® USB cable and will not need to purchase a USB-to-Serial adapter. However, you will need to install the software driver indicated below.

  • All other meters: You need to purchase a USB-to-Serial adapter compatible with your Mac operating system, such as Serialo RS-232 Adapter.

  1. Obtain the serial cable from your meter manufacturer. You will need a serial cable because most meter manufacturers that provide USB cables do not provide Mac support.

  2. Install the software driver for Mac at: http://serialio.com/download/Drivers/PL2303_Driver_1.2.1R2_MaxOSX.dmg. If you have a different adapter, you should install the driver provided by the adapter manufacturer.

  3. When prompted, enter your Mac username and password. The username must be the Administrator on your computer.

  4. Restart your computer when instructed.

  5. Log back into Carelink Personal and proceed through the upload steps. Plug the USB adaptor or LifeScan USB Cable for your meter into your USB port when prompted.

    Note

The first time you connect the cable after installing the driver, you may see a screen that tells you a new network interface has been detected. Do the following:

Click Network Preferences. The Network window is displayed.

    Click Apply.

    Close the Network window.

  6. Follow your onscreen steps from here.
