Insulin Injections Medtronic Insulin Pump Therapy
1 Children sometimes require very small doses of insulin that are very difficult to administer accurately with injections. Insulin pumps allow you to deliver smaller and more precise doses of insulin when that’s all your child’s body needs. (Insulin pumps can deliver as little as 0.025 units of insulin, something your insulin pen cannot do reliably.)
2 Insulin given with a syringe or a pen uses long-acting insulin that may work inconsistently and may lead to unexpected low glucose levels.1 Insulin pumps only use rapid-acting insulin, which is absorbed by the body in a more predictable way.
3 It’s very unpredictable how fast your child’s body absorbs insulin from injections. When children are growing, their glucose levels can change from day to day, even when the child seems to be doing the same things. With an insulin pump, you and your child will be able to better respond to changing schedules and unpredictable eating habits. If your child decides to go play outside, simply check blood sugar levels, appropriately adjust the rate of insulin delivery with a couple of button pushes, and off you go.
4 Finding a safe place to give your child an injection can lead to frustration and panic. Insulin pumps are about the size of a small cell phone. By pushing a couple of buttons on the insulin pump, you can give your child insulin without the hassle of drawing up insulin with a syringe or getting out a pen and cleaning the skin.
5 In a given year, your child will have received over 1,460 insulin injections.2 It is recommended that you change out the dime-sized adhesive on the skin where the insulin pump is continuously delivering insulin every 2–3 days. As a result, instead of thousands of injections a year, your child receives approximately 122.1

Did you know that insulin pump users are four times more likely to achieve and maintain their target A1C than those taking multiple daily injections?3 What’s more, insulin pump therapy can reduce your child’s episodes of low glucose levels by as much as 84%.4

The peace of mind you gain from choosing a Medtronic insulin pump goes well beyond replacing insulin injections with a healthy alternative. Medtronic offers service and support for your child all along the way.
